East Kimberley College was established on its present site in 1964 as the Kununurra High School, after moving from the Kimberley Research Station, now the Frank Wise Institute. The school opened its doors to students on the 17 February, 1964 and there were 68 students enrolled in Years 1 to 7, with 4 teachers.  On 16 May, 1964 the Kununurra High School was officially opened by Mr Lewis, WA Minister for Education.  In the early 1970’s the school changed it’s name to Kununurra District High School to reflect students to Year 10 being able to come to the school.  On 22 July, 2019 the school’s name changed to East Kimberley College to reflect students attending from Kindergarten to Year 12.

Today, the College campus is a modern site stretching over 6 ha including the senior school, secondary, primary, pre-primary and kindergarten buildings. The senior school building is set aside for those students completing Years 11 and 12. In 2006 the Performing Arts and Secondary Learning Area building was completed.

The College is very well resourced with facilities including two Computer Laboratories, Performing Arts Auditorium, Design and Technology workshop, Home Economics Centre, Photography area, Media Centre, Music Room, Art facilities, Senior School Resource Area and a combined Community and School Library.

These specialist facilities offer students the opportunity to acquire and develop skills in a broad range of areas. East Kimberley College is one of the largest High Schools in the State of Western Australia with approximately 70 teachers and 50 support staff catering for around 900 students from Kindergarten to Year 12. Approximately half of our students are Aboriginal.

Recent redevelopment of the school’s facilities have seen new a secondary block, canteen, a gymnasium and two new primary blocks completed.
